I’m passionate about ensuring that all families have the information, tools & guidance they need to create their best futures.
Sara Howard, LM, CPM, IBCLC
My journey to midwifery started during my childhood on the south side of Chicago, where I regularly watched my mother teach childbirth education to a room full of expecting parents. After moving to Los Angeles as a young adult, I followed my calling to midwifery by attending the National College of Midwifery and doing clinical preceptorships in private practices, birth centers and at Planned Parenthood. By the time I opened my own practice, I had attended over 200 births and served hundreds of people in their goals towards health and family creation.
I’m a Licensed Midwife (LM), a Certified Professional Midwife (CPM) and an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC). I hold certification in Basic Life Support (BLS), Neonatal Resuscitation (NRP) and I’m trained in Breastfeeding Without Birthing, which supports non-gestational and adoptive parents who would like to induce lactation to breast or chest feed.
My practice as a midwife is a sacred one - I’m honored to walk alongside my clients as they transform into parents, and I get to witness some of the earliest moments of connection between little ones and their families. The work that I do to support these moments takes many forms- from studying the latest in evidence-based models of care, to centering inclusive practices into every aspect of my work so that I can best show up for the amazing and diverse clientele that I serve.
I have a decade long background in healthcare advocacy prior to becoming a midwife, and my work to improve people’s experiences of conception, pregnancy, birth and parenthood, especially for LGBTQ+ and POC communities, extends beyond my private practice. I’m a founding member of the Queer and Transgender Midwives Association (QTMA), and I frequently teach online and in person on topics including queer conception and LGBTQIA competency for health care providers.
My dedication to inclusivity and better practices for marginalized people is not only a professional interest, but a very real personal one for me. I married my wife, Mabby, in 2011 and a few years later we welcomed our first set of twins in 2014. After experiencing the healthcare system firsthand as a queer pregnant person (and finding it extremely challenging), I rededicated myself to creating a safe place for families to receive competent care by opening my own midwifery practice. In 2019, my wife and I welcomed our second set of twins, and I continue to advocate for a world where families like ours are treated with as much dignity and respect as any other.
In 2022, I co-founded Moxie Birth, with business partner Bente Kaiser, MD, to expand out-of-hospital birth options in LA to include midwives working collaboratively with OB/GYNs.
